It answered to two other names before its present one. From 1926 it was Traktor ; from 1940, Dzerzhynets ; only in 1967 did it become Metalist.

Between 1970 and 1974, to a design by the architect Yu. Tabakova, the north and south stands went up along with floodlights and a scoreboard; the east stand followed in 1998. Then came the rebuild of 2007–2009 for UEFA Euro 2012, which pulled the east stand down entirely and put a new one in its place, extended the south, and hung a canopy on twenty-four V-shaped supports. The reopening was held on 5 December 2009.

The biggest crowd predates all of that: 42,000 for Metalist against Tavriya in the Soviet championship on 23 September 1980, a 1:1 draw. The modern high came on 9 September 2016, when 39,667 watched Shakhtar and Dynamo share the Ukrainian Super Cup.
