The building does not belong to a football club, but to the Foundation for Youth Promotion of Bernese Handball, a detail that explains the layout inside. The playing surface is not grass, but a double-swing floor, a synthetic system installed over a suspended wooden substructure. Matches here often draw crowds of two thousand, a number that fills the standing areas almost to the top of the barriers. The seating is limited to about fifteen hundred places, and fans who want to sit have to arrive early. The atmosphere is different from the terraces at the football stadium in the city centre. There are no flares or pyrotechnics allowed under the roof, so the danger is quieter, coming from the physical contact of the game rather than the crowd. The arena hosts the Swiss Handball Cup Finals, where the tension is palpable in the way the players watch each other, not in the roar of the supporters.

It is not a monument to football, but the national performance centre for handball in Switzerland. The architects Sven Stucki and Marco Rüfenacht designed it to look out over the landscape, but the games take place in a controlled climate. The surface is synthetic, but the effort is real. A spectator notices the way the light hits the court from the high windows, and the way the sound of the ball hitting the floor echoes through the empty seats. The arena has been open since August 2018, and the wear on the floor is minimal, but the history of the matches played there is written in the scores on the board, not in the stone of the building. It is a functional space, built for sport, not for sightseeing.
