The initials in the name trip people up: MSU here means Montclair State, not the Michigan school four states away.
The site did double duty before the soccer park existed. Pittser Field was already on campus, named for Chet Pittser , the football coach who took his side through an unbeaten season in 1947, and the ground itself had been a baseball field before the university built the soccer park over it in 1998.
New York Red Bulls backed the switch to FieldTurf in 2012, the same year floodlights went in for night matches, and the surface was refreshed again in 2018. That FIFA-certified turf is part of why the ground has picked up tenants well beyond the campus programme: Red Bulls II have called it home since 2017, Gotham FC used it through the 2020 and 2021 NWSL seasons, and FC Motown have played there since 2022. The first team have even brought U.S. Open Cup fixtures to Pittser Field in 2019, 2022 and 2023.
The largest recorded gate came on 21 October 2018, when Red Bulls II beat Pittsburgh Riverhounds 2-1 in front of just over 1,500. The number that stands out more is 6 August 2022, when FC Motown edged Crossfire Redmond 4-3 in the NPSL final with 2,065 watching.
