Murrayfield Stadium
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Formerly: BT Murrayfield Stadium
Murrayfield has hosted matches in the 1991, 1999, and 2007 Rugby World Cups. It has also held Heineken Cup finals and hosted the final concert of the Live 8 series in July 2005. The official attendance record is 104,000, set on 1 March 1975, for a Five Nations Championship match between Scotland and Wales. This crowd size stands as a European record.
The ground was commissioned and built by the Scottish Rugby Union, which purchased the land from the Edinburgh Polo Club. It officially opened on 21 March 1925, with the first match played that day between Scotland and England. The original construction involved one concrete stand and three earth embankments. A major redevelopment project launched in October 1991 and completed in 1994/1995 replaced the old West Stand with a new one featuring a 48-metre cantilever roof. This project added floodlights for the first time and converted the stadium to an all-seater configuration.
The current seating capacity is 67,144, making it the largest stadium in Scotland. The stadium has operated under sponsored names, including BT Murrayfield Stadium and Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium.
