Mzuzu Stadium

The ground on Makata Road does not offer the polished look of a modern arena. Its history is written in how it was built rather than how it looks now, as the Malawi government constructed it using prison labour from inmates at Mzuzu Prison. While the official capacity sits at 15,000, recent reports from the Mzuzu City Council suggest the actual seated space is closer to 14,000 .

The playing surface is a GrassMaster hybrid system, but the quality of the pitch has dictated the rhythm of games played here. In August 2023, the Football Association of Malawi placed a temporary ban on matches because the surface was described as bumpy and rough, leading to safety concerns. The club Moyale Barracks FC, who have played there since 2019, would be used to the uneven footing. Renovations in 2024 brought pitch leveling and replanting, yet the ground retains a character that is less about pristine turf and more about endurance.

It is not just a football venue; the stadium also hosts the Mayor’s Trophy Tournament and has even seen concerts, such as the one headlined by Malawian rapper Gwamba. Matches played here are often decided by who can adapt to the conditions.
