Nokia Arena
Tampere, Finland
Formerly: Tampere Deck Arena, UROS LIVE, Tampere Central Multipurpose Arena
The Nokia Arena sits on top of the old Tampere railway station. It is a quiet building from the street.
It opened in 2021, a building designed by Daniel Libeskind to sit above an active railway line without stopping the trains. The arena is the home for the two local ice hockey teams, Tappara and Ilves, and the playing surface is natural ice. The most visible innovation is the LED dasher boards that line the rink, the first of their kind.
The building is part of a larger development called the Tampere Deck, which includes offices and a hotel. The cost was roughly €550 million for the whole project. The city uses the space for the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, too.
It was built for the NHL Global Series, where the Colorado Avalanche and the Columbus Blue Jackets played, and for the Finnish national team.
