Nyayo National Stadium sits on a quiet strip of Langata Road. It was opened by Daniel arap Moi in 1983. The original name, Nyayo, was briefly displaced when a sponsorship deal with Coca-Cola took effect in 2009, but the branding agreement collapsed within months and the stadium reverted to its founding title. That was not the last time its name would be tied to a business; a few years later, Britam secured rights to the banners. A stampede on a matchday in 2010 left seven people dead. In recent years, the structure has been stripped back and rebuilt. The stadium also serves as a memorial ground. It hosted the state funeral of Daniel arap Moi and, most recently, the funeral of Raila Odinga.
