Oleai Sports Complex
Saipan, MP
The Oleai Sports Complex sits in the village of Oleai. It is not a stadium built for spectacle; it is a working ground. The most striking element is the red running track that encircles the pitch, a feature that defines the facility. The track is not a temporary addition but the central spine of the complex, separating the playing surface from the open space beyond.
Built in 1990, the venue has a long, quiet history. It served as a base for the Micronesian Games that same year, but its most defining moment came much later. Typhoon Yutu struck in 2018. The stands were stripped, the track torn up, and the buildings damaged beyond simple repair. What stands today is a reconstruction. The red surface of the track is newer than the original concrete, a sign of the $1.7 million FEMA grant that arrived in 2020 to bring the site back to life.
The complex is small, holding only 2,000 spectators, and the seating is minimal. You can see the simple concrete structures and the open-air nature of the facility. It is a place where the weather is a constant factor, the humidity thick and the rain frequent. It hosts the Northern Mariana Islands national football team, but you will also see cricket pitches laid out on the grass, or athletes training on the cinder surface of the track. It is a multi-use ground in the truest sense, not just a football pitch with a track around it. The baseball field, named after Francisco Tan Ko M. Palacios, sits adjacent to the main oval, a reminder of the complex's broader reach. It was here, in June 2022, that the Pacific Mini Games kicked off, with over 3,000 spectators turning up despite the capacity limit, a testament to the importance of the venue to the local population. It is a place of recovery, built again after the storm, and now looking towards a larger expansion that includes a swimming pool and tennis courts. For now, it remains a simple, functional space, defined by the track and the pitch, and the people who use it.
