The clue is in the street name. Construction started in July 1919, and the stadium opened on 23 May 1920.

That origin explains the shape of the place. It was laid out for 30,000 spectators, 20,000 of them standing, which was the arithmetic of a crowd that arrived on foot and stayed on its feet. What remains holds a fraction of that figure.

Antwerp locals rarely use the formal name. To them it is 't Kiel , after the district, and that is the name you will hear on a matchday. Nothing has displaced it — the ground has never carried a sponsor's name in more than a century. The official title, Olympisch Stadion, and the neighbourhood nickname are the only two labels it has ever needed.

The tenants are Beerschot , and the surface they play on is natural grass.
