Oriole Park at Camden Yards

The ground keeps the rail yard it replaced. A long brick warehouse runs right along the outfield wall, and the stands curve around it rather than rising in a uniform block. That is the one thing that makes the place different.

There is a marker on the fence behind home plate. It reads "ORIGINAL 1954 FOUL POLE FROM MEMORIAL STADIUM". That piece of the old ground sits on the new one. It connects the present to what was here before.

The pitch is natural grass. It sits under a sky that is usually clear over Baltimore, but the wind can come in off the river and pull the ball.

The capacity has shrunk. Here the game is played with a brick wall behind it.

The place has held an all-star game and a papal mass. It has hosted the home run derby, but those are events that happen anywhere. The ground itself is the point. It is built into the city, not set apart from it. That is what makes it.
