Parkstadion

The Parkstadion stood in the district of Erle, a place where the ground moved under its foundations. It was built on the site of the former Buer airfield, rising from earth that would later sink. Construction began on 29 August 1969 and the stadium opened on 4 August 1973. FC Schalke 04 played there for twenty-eight years, until 2001, when the club moved to the adjacent Arena AufSchalke. The capacity reached 70,600 at its opening, a figure that shrank after the 1998 renovation converted standing areas to seats. The attendance record of 72,000 came on 19 September 1973, when West Germany beat France 2–1 in a friendly that predated the club's departure from the ground.

The stadium hosted five matches during the 1974 FIFA World Cup, including Yugoslavia's 9–0 victory over Zaire, the biggest win in tournament history, and the Netherlands' 2–0 win over East Germany. It also held two group matches at UEFA Euro 1988 and the first leg of the 1997 UEFA Cup Final, where Schalke drew 0–0 with Inter Milan. Pope John Paul II celebrated a mass for approximately 90,000 people at the ground on 2 May 1987. The venue also hosted concerts by Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Genesis. The southern curve was demolished in 2004 to make way for a rehabilitation centre and a hotel. The remaining main stand came down in 2008. Mining subsidence caused the structural damage that ended the stadium's life, and a new Parkstadion opened on the same site for the 2020/21 season.
