The ground on Humska Street began as an army project.

What the club inherited was a bowl built for standing crowds, holding some 55,000 people. A further round of work in 2010, ahead of a Champions League tie with Arsenal, tightened the terracing and widened the pitch; that match still holds the stadium's record attendance in the modern era, 29,348.

The stadium has hosted more than football: the 1962 European Athletics Championships, a Bijelo Dugme-headlined rock festival in 1979, Metallica in 2004, AC/DC in 2009. Belgrade will see the ground again on the continental stage in 2027, when it hosts matches at the European Under-21 Championship.
