The playing surface is natural grass. The facility has been known as Paton Field since Sir Alfred Paton gifted Thurstaston Hill to the National Trust in 1928, with the condition that the Rugby Club would have a pitch 'in perpetuity'. The original pavilion was built in 1928, and members levelled the pitch in the 1930s.

It is the home of Caldy Rugby Football Club, which was founded in 1924 as Old Caldeians Rugby Club. The club plays in the RFU Championship, which is the second tier of English rugby. On 23 April 2022, Caldy beat Sale FC 13-9 to win National League 1 and gain promotion to the RFU Championship. The highest recorded attendance was 3,000 spectators for that match. Regular weekend crowds are typically no more than 1,000. The venue also hosts the Caldy Sevens tournament, which has been held there for several decades. The ground is situated in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral on the Telegraph Road.

Some sources spell the name Peyton Field, though that is also the name of a different venue at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Washington. The address is listed as Telegraph Road, Thurstaston/Caldy, Wirral Peninsula, with postcode CH48 1NZ. The capacity is 4,000 spectators. Drainage repairs were carried out in 2025, and the pitch is maintained by volunteers. No football clubs have used the ground.
