Pohang Steel Yard

Pohang Steel Yard carries the weight of its name in more ways than one. It is South Korea’s first dedicated football stadium, and the steelwork of the structure still nods to the company that built it. You can see the proximity of the stands to the edge of the pitch; there is little room for separation between the supporters and the game.

The atmosphere is defined by proximity rather than volume. The supporters sit close enough to hear the shuffles of boots. This closeness has shaped how matches are played here; visitors often feel pressed before the ball is even kicked. The stadium is not a modern arena, and that is part of its character. It is where the history of Korean football has been played out in a setting that hasn't been sanitised by time.

The ground has seen its share of turbulence. A piece of concrete fell from the ceiling of the visitor's area, injuring a spectator and forcing the Korea Professional Football League (KPFL) to ban matches until safety was ensured. That incident reminded everyone that the building is showing its age. The club has had to relocate some home games since then, moving fixtures to other venues while repairs are made. It is a reminder that the structure is not invulnerable.

Despite the wear, the pitch remains a focal point. The natural grass is kept in good condition. The players move across it with space to play, though the stands loom large on either side. The stadium is not a tourist destination, and it does not pretend to be. It is a working ground, owned by POSCO, where the connection between the steel industry and the team remains visible in the concrete beams overhead. It is a place that has not changed its identity, even as the league around it has evolved.
