Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Sports City carries two names in everyday use — the formal one, honouring the late crown prince, and the older Al-Mahalah Stadium, after the district of Abha it sits in.

For most of its history the ground has done modest, local work, shared between Al-Abha, its tenant since the stadium opened, and Damac. Then, on 17 August 2024, it was handed a fixture well above its usual level: Al-Nassr against Al-Hilal, the kind of match that in most seasons would be staged in Riyadh or Jeddah rather than in the Asir province.

That final drew 14,357 spectators, a stadium record that lasted less than six months. On 8 February 2025 an otherwise routine league meeting between Damac and Al-Hilal pulled in 15,066, breaking the mark again — a domestic attendance record set twice inside a single season, the second time by a league fixture rather than a final.

The pitch has also carried continental age-group football: Saudi Arabia's under-23s met Lebanon, Cambodia and Mongolia here in September 2023 during qualifying for the Asian U-23 championship, and Yemen came to Abha for a friendly on 16 September 2024. Earlier still, the ground hosted the International Friendship Tournament and the International Elite Friendly Championship, with Al-Hilal, Al-Shabab and Italy's Bologna among the sides that passed through.
