Progressive Field opened in 1994 as Jacobs Field, but the name change came later. Inside, the sightlines are clean, and the seats in the lower bowl tilt forward just enough to keep you leaning in. The surface is natural grass, cut in a pattern that catches the light differently depending on the hour, and the infield dirt is packed tight around the bases.

It has hosted more than baseball. An ice rink appeared on the field in winter, and a college hockey match drew a crowd that had not come for a game. The attendance record stands at 45,505, set when the World Series came to town and the gates were opened wider than usual. Capacity has dropped since those days, but the shape of the place has not changed, and the old steel trusses still hold up the roof over the main concourse.

The street corner outside, where Ontario Street meets the stadium entrance, is always busy. People wait for taxis or walk past the vending machines before finding their way into the turnstiles. There is a bridge that crosses the road to the north side, and from the top of it you can see the skyline behind the outfield. The place does not try to be anything other than what it is: a ballpark that opened at the right time and has not needed to reinvent itself.
