Rankhofhalle: Stadium in Basel

The Rankhofhalle sits at the edge of the Riehen district. Constructed between 1999 and 2001 and handed over in 2002, it was designed by Hartmann + Stula Architekten for the Sportamt Basel-Stadt.

With a capacity of 1,500, the space forces a closeness that outdoor venues rarely achieve. The venue serves as the home ground for top-tier Swiss handball teams, including RTV 1879 Basel and SG ATV/KV Basel, as well as field hockey matches for the Basler Hockey Club in the National League A. It also hosts volleyball for Traktor Basel and day-to-day school sports for vocational students.

The surface is not natural grass but a synthetic or wooden flooring typical of indoor halls, providing a consistent bounce for fast-paced games. There are no former names or sponsorship titles to complicate its identity; it is known simply as the Rankhofhalle, or sometimes the Sporthalle Rankhof.
