SAP Arena
Mannheim, Germany
Formerly: Mannheim-Arena (planned name)
The SAP Arena has a roof that does not move. It opened in 2005 , replacing the Eisstadion am Friedrichspark where the Adler had played since 1938.
What makes the place different is the floor. The retractable system gives the arena its character.
The arena holds 13,600 for hockey and 14,500 for handball. The official attendance record is 15,000, set at a concert. It has hosted the IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship matches in 2010, the Handball World/European Championships in 2007 and 2024, and heavyweight boxing matches featuring Wladimir Klitschko between 2006 and 2013. Madonna, Depeche Mode, Tina Turner and Justin Timberlake have all played here. In 2018, the arena became the first in Germany to offer location-based services using iBeacons.
The city of Mannheim will take ownership of the building after thirty years, around 2035. Until then, the Arena Mannheim Besitzgesellschaft mbH & Co.
