Sapporo Dome

The Sapporo Dome sits in a pocket of Toyohira-ku, holding 42,845 seats. It is not a traditional football stadium. The pitch is not fixed but moves.

The ground is distinct because of that mechanism. When the Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo play in the J.League, a natural grass surface is grown outside in the cold Hokkaido air and then slid into the arena on a hovercraft platform. The turf keeps its warmth through an under-pitch heating system. The same space holds a permanent artificial surface for baseball, a sport the stadium lost to a new venue in 2023.

It gained its first global profile during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, hosting a match between Argentina and England that drew 35,927 spectators. That record stood until a Kirin Challenge Cup friendly against South Korea in 2011, when the roof held 50,000 people.

The structure was designed by Hiroshi Hara of Atelier Phi and opened on June 2, 2001. It has always been owned by a third-sector corporation, Sapporo Dome Co., Ltd. For twenty-three years it carried no commercial name. On August 1, 2024, it became the Daiwa House Premist Dome, a change that reflects the commercial reality of modern Japanese sport rather than any architectural shift. The stadium does not host the Emperor’s Cup final or the J.League Cup final.
