The SPIE Arena is defined by its roof. The venue opened on January 13, 1962, as an open-air rink before the City of Rosenheim covered it with a glued-laminated timber roof in 1973.
The primary tenant is the Starbulls Rosenheim, a professional ice hockey team in the DEL2. The arena has been their home since 2000. The capacity sits at 4,425 after standing areas were converted into seating during the 2025/26 season. In March 2026, a major expansion began, adding two floors for VIP boxes and offices to the existing structure. The investment is approximately 7.4 million Euros.
The venue has hosted the German Men's National Ice Hockey Team, including a friendly against Switzerland in April 2022. The name has changed frequently due to sponsorship. It was known as the ROFA-Stadion from 2019 to 2026, and the emilo-Stadion between 2016 and 2019. Before that, it carried the name Städtisches Kathrein-Stadion until 2015. The original name was Städtisches Eisstadion.
