Sportanlagen Allmend (Allmend Süd Platz 35)

Luzern, Switzerland

Formerly: Stadion Allmend (old stadium, 1934–2009)

The stadium that stands on this ground today is not the one Luzern grew up with. From 1934 the old Stadion Allmend held its place at Horwerstrasse, and it grew the way old grounds do — a stand widened in 1957, works through 1981 to 1983, a roof over the north end added in 1995. By the time it came down in 2009 it held between 13,000 and 13,500, split between covered seats, open seats and terracing. The biggest crowd it ever saw came on 19 April 1993, when 26,100 packed in for FC Luzern's 4-1 win over FC Basel.

What replaced it opened in August 2011 as the Swissporarena, seating 17,000, and from summer 2026 it carries a new name, Thermoplan Arena. The wider complex around it, the Sportanlagen Allmend in Luzern Süd, still does the unglamorous work a big club needs: the Süd Platz 35 pitch, laid with artificial turf, is where FC Luzern's women's side and its junior teams train and play, well away from matchday crowds.

The site carries its own quiet correction, too. The ground itself, and the club's history on it, goes back to 1934.
