Sportpark Höhenberg
Cologne, Germany
Formerly: VfR-Stadion, Viktoria-Kampfbahn, Flughafenstadion
The ground in Höhenberg has outlived three of its own names. It opened in August 1921 as the VfR-Stadion, built for some 30,000 spectators. The 1931 rebuild turned it into an athletics arena; the reopening on 20 September 1931 drew 8,000 for a friendly between VfR Köln and Schalke 04. Through the 1990s a sponsorship deal with the Cologne/Bonn airport operator had it listed as the Flughafenstadion.
The modernisation of 2019–2022, carried out to meet 3. Liga requirements, worked in the opposite direction to most such projects: the 2019 expansion had taken the ground to 10,001, and the finished stadium holds 8,343 — 5,117 standing, 3,226 seated. Verena Dietrich and Kirsch Architekten shaped the present form. In 2021 the pitch was relaid with rolled turf over new drainage and undersoil heating.
Since 2021/22 the ground has been the fixed venue for the Middle Rhine Cup final, under an agreement running to 2026.
