The name has stayed the same since the ground was a garden. The pitch was in use before the club that plays on it existed — FC Frankonia were out there in 1906, eight years before FC Neudorf, the side that became Racing Club de Strasbourg, took on the lease in the Hammerle garden. The first stand was wood, put up in 1921.

What shapes the ground today is a rebuild that ran from 1979 to 1984, drawn up by François Sauer and André Dahan for the European Championship. They took out the running track and squared the ground off into four stands: 44,566 for West Germany against Portugal on 14 June 1984, a goalless group game. After the Heysel disaster the terraces went to seats through the 1990s.

The club paid for the ground beneath the football too. In the summer of 2018 Racing funded new drainage and a hybrid surface, around a million euros of work, and that is what is played on now.

Since 2023 the ground has been a building site, all four stands going up towards 32,000 seats, with solar panels, rainwater collection and canopies made from Airbus A340 fuselages. The 2024/25 season was played in front of roughly 19,000. Costs were fixed at 160 million euros in May 2023, with the work due to finish in August 2026.
