Stade Georges Pompidou
Valence, France
The Stade Georges Pompidou is a multi-purpose venue.
The ground sits on Rue Jean-Vilar, though a secondary address near Rue Fernandel still appears on some documents. It opened in November 1973 for a match between France and Romania. What remains constant is the natural grass and the scale: around fifteen thousand spectators.
The old record belongs to a Coupe de France tie in 1981 when ASOA Valence met AS Saint-Étienne, 17,253 people watching Valence lose 0-1. A 1995 meeting with Marseille is sometimes credited with an even higher crowd, but the 1981 figure is the one that survives in the archives. The rugby club ROC La Voulte-Valence and the football side ASOA Valence share the ground, and the city owns the land.
