Stade Raoul-Barrière
Béziers, France
Formerly: Stade de la Méditerranée
Stade Raoul-Barrière opened in 1990 on the site of the old Stade de Sauclières, replacing a historic ground with a modern concrete shell. Originally called Stade de la Méditerranée, the name was changed in June 2019 to honour Raoul Barrière, a local rugby legend who had died that March. The stadium sits in the south-east of Béziers, at Avenue des Olympiades, surrounded by flat fields and residential rooftops that stretch out to the horizon. It is not a landmark by design, but by necessity.
The playing surface is a hybrid mix of natural grass and synthetic fibres, laid down in 2019 to ensure the pitch can withstand the rigours of professional rugby in the Pro D2. The capacity has settled at 18,555, a figure that has fluctuated since the ground first opened with 22,500 seats. It hosted matches during the 1991 and 1999 Rugby World Cups, drawing crowds that packed every available space. A football club, Avenir Sportif Béziers, played there during their 2018–2019 season in Ligue 2, but the ground belongs to the rugby club, AS Béziers Hérault.
There is nothing hidden in the architecture. The stands are open to the elements, and the wind from the Mediterranean can sweep straight through the bowl. A concert by Johnny Hallyday in 2009 drew 30,000 people, but for a sporting event, the record remains 20,000, set during a European Cup semi-final in April 2002. The ground does not pretend to be anything other than a working venue, simple and functional, built to last.
