Union have played here since 1920, the club taking over the site in the same year the ground opened formally on 7 August; a first match had already been played that March. No architect's name attaches to the original work — it was done by the club and the local authority, and that pattern came back nearly ninety years later. When the terraces were rebuilt in 2008 and 2009, stone giving way to concrete, with a roof over the standing areas, undersoil heating and a digital board, roughly 2,300 supporters put in some 140,000 hours of labour themselves.

The second phase was money rather than muscle. Between 2012 and 2013 the old main stand came down and a new one went up, 100.5 metres long and 23.5 metres high, holding 3,617 seats, at a cost of €15 million — €10 million from sponsors, €3 million raised through shares, €2 million from the club.

The ground took its record crowd on 17 October 2015, a sell-out of 22,012 for a 3-3 draw with FC St. Pauli. Weeks earlier, on 3 September, Linkin Park had opened the place to concerts, with Rammstein, Depeche Mode and Metallica following.

Since 2003 the stands have also filled each December for the Weihnachtssingen, the carol singing that has drawn up to 28,500.
