Stadion Esserberg

It is not the kind of place you can miss.

It opened on September 18, 1921, designed by Evert van Linge, who was also a player for the local club Be Quick 1887. The club had purchased the land on the Esserberg meadow after leaving their previous ground in Groningen. The original name was Be Quick Stadion. It was later renamed Stadion Esserberg (or Esserbergstadion) after the location. The original capacity was 18,000 spectators.

After the main wooden stand burned down in 1933, it was rebuilt in concrete by Evert van Linge, inspired by the Marathon Tribune at the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium; the fire department from Groningen was delayed because they waited for permission from the unavailable Haren mayor. The capacity was reduced to 12,000 after one of the two uncovered stands was demolished and replaced by the club building, with further modernizations in 1997, 2010, and 2015.

The playing surface is artificial turf. The primary tenant is Be Quick 1887, which has used the stadium since 1921. Other tenants include VV Helpman and, since 2025, FC Groningen Vrouwen. The stadium hosted the annual Eurovoetbal tournament from 1977 to 2013. In 2011, a fire broke out in a changing room under the stand. Before the construction of the Oosterpark Stadion, it was the primary venue for important matches involving Groningen teams in the pre-professional era.
