The stadium sits in the Poljud district of Split. It was built for the 8th Mediterranean Games, opened in 1979 with Boris Magaš as the architect. The original plan to call it Stadion Tito after Josip Broz Tito was turned down the following year. It has never had a sponsor name.

The capacity has changed with the times. It held over 60,000 in the 1980s when terraces were allowed. Safety rules later forced an all-seater conversion, bringing the number down to 33,987. The pitch itself is a Mixto hybrid system, installed in 2021 after years of natural grass. The surface has taken a beating from concerts, including Roger Waters and Marko Perković Thompson.

The ground is the home of HNK Hajduk Split. It has hosted major athletics events and the 1990 European Athletics Championships. There is a history of tension here, including a UEFA Cup match against Marseille in 1988 that ended in a walkover after crowd trouble. A Croatian flag burned during a game against Partizan Belgrade in 1990, a moment that stayed with the city. These days, it holds regular Croatian Cup finals and does not play host to European finals.
