Stadium municipal
Toulouse, France
Formerly: Parc Municipal des Sports, Stadium Municipal
The ground opened in 1937 when Toulouse was preparing to host the 1938 FIFA World Cup, though the tournament eventually moved to another city. It has been the home of Toulouse FC since 1970 and the sanctuary for Stade Toulousain, the rugby club. The distinguishing feature is not the age of the structure but the revisions made to the original design in 1949, then again in 1997–1998 for the next major World Cup, and most recently in 2014–2015 for UEFA Euro 2016. That last rebuild cost approximately €40 million and trimmed the capacity from 36,580 to the current 33,150.
The playing surface is AirFibr, a hybrid system designed to withstand the heavy use of two codes of football. The stands are arranged in a horseshoe shape, open at one end. The capacity has fluctuated with each renovation: the original design held up to 40,000, the figure that attended the Michael Jackson concert in 1992, while the rugby attendance record of 39,450 was set in 1951 for a match between US Carmaux and Stadoceste Tarbais.
For football, the attendance record stands at 39,652, recorded on February 14, 1999, when Toulouse FC played Olympique Marseille. The ground has also hosted six matches at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, including the game between the Netherlands and FR Yugoslavia, and four fixtures at UEFA Euro 2016. Rugby fans know it as the venue that hosted matches during the 2007 and 2023 Rugby World Cups. The address remains 1, Allée Gabriel Biènés, though the name has shifted from Parc Municipal des Sports to Stadium de Toulouse, a change that followed the Euro 2016 works.
