The Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo holds a distinct position as a multi-purpose arena where athletics and football share the same patch of Zoysia grass. The surface failed twice, in 2002 and 2012, before a major resurfacing project began in 2018.

What you see from the stands is an open, airy space.

The ground opened in 1962, a relic of the era when V. A. Sugathadasa, the country’s first Minister of Sports, donated the land. It has hosted significant events like the 1991 and 2006 South Asian Games and the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup. Yet, for the daily game, it serves as the home for the Sri Lanka national football team and local clubs like Colombo FC.
