The stadium sits across the Sacramento River from the state capitol in the Natomas area. It opened in 2000 as Raley Field, named after the regional supermarket chain, and was built with bond financing rather than public tax dollars. The ground has hosted several sports over the years, including a Triple-A All-Star Game in 2005, an American Hockey League match in 2015, and a soccer friendly between Norwich City and Dorados de Sinaloa in 2013. For most of its life, the home side has been the Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League.
A new 10mm LED display has been installed in right-center field, and the sound system has been upgraded. The surface is natural grass, a decision made in October 2024 after concerns were raised about the high temperatures on synthetic turf during Sacramento's hot summers. The old playing surface was replaced in late 2024 and early 2025 with a high-tech system using AirPAT technology for irrigation and aeration.
