It was not built for the World Cup, which passed through the city at a different ground, but it hosted the U-17 World Cup in 2007. That tournament brought matches like the semi-final between Nigeria and Germany to the natural grass, and the stadium has been renovated since then to meet the demands of the K League. The club that plays here most often, Suwon FC, has used the ground since 2003, though before them the stadium was home to Suwon Samsung Bluewings, who arrived from the old Yukong side in 1987.

Attendance records do not match the current capacity of 11,808. The stadium has hosted other events too: the 1988 Olympics used the gymnasium for handball and table tennis, and the 2014 Asian Games followed with similar sports.
