Štadión FC Petržalka 1898
Bratislava, Slovakia
Formerly: Štadión Petržalka (until 2012)
Štadión FC Petržalka 1898 sits in the Petržalka district of Bratislava. The ground that stands here now is the second. It was built in 2012 after the previous stadium, which had served the team for 22 years, was demolished. The club could not stay in the city without a pitch, so they moved quickly.
Players walk up a concrete staircase beneath the green steelwork to reach the dressing rooms. Outside, a pile of sand and bare trees suggest the area is not yet finished.
On match days, the atmosphere changes. Fans gather behind the goal, holding up black and white flags and banners. One large banner reads «FC PETRŽALKA» in white letters on a black background. Supporters wave scarves and castanets, making a steady noise that carries across the pitch. The covering over the stand keeps the crowd warm even when the wind comes off the Danube. The playing surface is artificial, a bright green carpet that does not muddy in the rain. Games played here tend to be faster because the ball moves quickly over the synthetic material. The ground is small enough that the crowd is close to the action, making every tackle and mistake visible. The club has spent years trying to return to the top flight, and this stadium is the stage for their efforts.
