The Northolme

The ground is defined by what sits beside it.

That stand is the Ping Stand, put in place in 2000 after the wooden structure it replaced was lost to vandals during the war. The layout is cramped by modern standards, but the proximity of the stands to the pitch means the game feels close. The supporters’ club bought the ground in the late 1990s, a decision that has kept the club’s history tied to this specific corner of the town. The surface is natural grass, kept in good order despite the modest facilities.

What makes the place work is not its size, but its persistence. The site has hosted cricket since the 1850s, and the footballers have played here since 1884. That continuity is visible in the patchwork of buildings and the way the pitch is fitted into the available space. It is a ground that does not pretend to be anything other than what it is.
