The most striking feature of Tropicana Field is the roof, which is a fixed, non-retractable dome made of a translucent membrane. This structure makes the stadium the only non-retractable domed stadium in Major League Baseball .
The stadium has a history of adapting to its tenants. It opened as the Florida Suncoast Dome before becoming known as ThunderDome. It has hosted the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning and the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm, but it is primarily known for the Rays. The capacity has shifted over the decades; the upper deck is now closed.
Recent years have brought new challenges. In October 2024, Hurricane Milton damaged the original roof, forcing the team to relocate for the 2025 season. The new PTFE tensile membrane roof is being installed to replace the old fiberglass structure.
