Vindico Arena

This is the Cardiff International Sports Village, a complex that has seen its heart change shape more times than most towns change their names.

The ice stretches out, white and unbroken, marked with red and blue lines that look like veins on a patient. The Cardiff Devils play here, and the sound of skates cutting into the frozen surface is a constant hum. The stands curve around the rink, tier upon tier of seats in dark colours, watching the game unfold. There are no trees to break the wind; the building is a box, sealed tight against the Welsh weather. The netting above the glass keeps the puck in play, and the crowd, when they come, never stop shouting.

Outside, the world is wetter. The rain falls harder on the roof than anywhere else, drumming a rhythm that matches the pace of the game inside. The building was built by the Kier Group, but names fade. First it was the Ice Arena Wales, then the Viola Arena, and now it is the Vindico Arena. The name changes because the money moves, but the ice stays the same. People skate on it every day, children learning to balance, players running drills until their legs burn. It is not a temple, just a place where the game is played.

There was a time when the Cardiff Devils played in a tent, a big blue structure that flapped in the wind. That was before the steel took hold. Now the structure is solid, the roof fixed tight. The attendance record was set on the opening night, a crowd that filled every seat, but that number means little when the season is long.
