Ground went in during 1999, and the stadium opened on 2 September 2002 under a plan for 60,000 seats — the number the arena is still sometimes credited with, though the figure on record today sits at 54,357.

Its first real test on the world stage came in 2007, when it hosted matches at the Women's World Cup, including games at the finals stage. It returned to that role in 2015, staging fixtures at the EAFF East Asian Cup and the Asian Athletics Championships in the same year.

No major reconstruction of the stadium has followed the 2002 opening, though that is set to change: Wuhan Sports Center Group announced in December 2025 that the venue is earmarked for a large-scale rebuild under the city's 2026–2030 development plan, one aimed at turning Zhuankou into a dedicated football ground holding 80,000.
