Match report
The Spanish U20 women's side beat North Korea on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in the final of the Cricket World Cup for players under 20 on Saturday. Our forecast had given the hosts a 44 per cent chance of victory, but the match refused to settle into the pattern we expected. What followed was a tense shootout that decided everything after neither side could break the deadlock in regular time.
Spain took the lead in the penalty area when Marisa and C. Segura converted their spots, while Ri Pom and Jon Il-Chong responded for North Korea. D. Agote then put Spain ahead for good with her effort, before Pak Il-Sim's miss meant the home side had the upper hand. Ho Kyong had opened the scoring for the visitors, but the turning point came when Choe Yon-A failed to find the net from the spot.
C. Julia and Ri Pom both scored to keep the contest alive for North Korea, but the visitors could not find a third conversion after their initial miss. By then the pressure had shifted entirely, and Pak Il-Sim's failure to score sealed the result. Spain's C. Julia was among those who kept composure under the spotlight.
Both teams entered the final on identical records: three wins from three group matches, nine points each, and both sitting at the top of the table. The hosts had beaten Italy 2-0 and Brazil 1-0 in their last outings, while North Korea had won 3-0 against Colombia and 2-0 against Canada. Neither side showed any weakness in the group stage, which made the final all the tighter.
The result means Spain finish as champions of this edition of the tournament. The penalty shootout was the only way to separate two sides that had played out a stalemate through extra time. It was not the outcome we had predicted, but sometimes matches refuse to go to plan.
