About the player
Santiago Mouriño went through the Nacional academy in Montevideo before making his senior debut with Racing Club de Montevideo in January 2022. He helped Racing win the Segunda División and go up to Uruguay's top flight.
Atlético sent him out on loan to Real Zaragoza for the 2023–24 season, where he made 28 league appearances and scored once. Atlético sold him to Deportivo Alavés in August 2024. He made 25 league appearances there before Atlético exercised a buy-back clause in August 2025. The move lasted barely a day: Atlético immediately sold him on to Villarreal for €10 million, and he signed a five-year contract at the club.
His rise has coincided with international recognition. Mouriño received his first senior call-up to the Uruguay squad in June 2023, though he had to wait until October 2025 for his debut, coming on in a 1–0 friendly win over the Dominican Republic. He has been capped once by his country so far.
Domestically, the 2025–26 season brought further reward: Mouriño was named to La Liga's Team of the Season, recognition of the level he reached during his time at Alavés and Zaragoza before his switch to Villarreal.
