AS Cotonou

The Stade René Pleven d'Akpakpa, in the Akpakpa district of Cotonou, is a ground in the middle of a rebuild. Reconstruction and renovation work began in July 2025. AS Cotonou, in yellow and black, share the city with ASPAC and Coton FC.

The club's owner is the National Social Security Fund (Caisse Nationale de Sécurité Sociale, CNSS). The present organisation was founded on 27 May 2006 and marked its 20th anniversary this year. It carries the name of an earlier AS Cotonou, the side that won the Benin championship in 1971 and is generally regarded as the origin of the current club's honours.

That title took the team into the 1972 African Cup of Champions Clubs. The run was short: ASFA Dakar eliminated them in the preliminary round. The club has never won the Coupe du Bénin.

Its players have mostly gone abroad to build careers. Midfielder Mattéo Ahlinvi left for Dijon FCO and later played for FK Čukarički. Goalkeeper Serge Obassa moved to Remo Stars in Nigeria and played for the Benin national team. Chams Deen Chaona went to Al Khums in Libya.

The league title is the club's only one, and it dates from 1971.
