Eisbachtal

Sportfreunde Eisbachtal captured the Rheinlandliga title in 2019. It was not a sudden leap into prominence but the culmination of decades spent grinding out results on the periphery of German football. The club recognizes 1919 as the start of its lineage through its oldest predecessor, TuS Nentershausen, though the modern entity only coalesced in 1966 when five local youth teams decided to stop playing separately. They merged into a single body, choosing the name Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde and the colours red and white.

They play at the Eisbachtalstadion, a ground without covered seating that holds roughly 6,000 spectators. In recent years, the club has increasingly relied on an adjacent artificial turf side pitch with floodlights for its home matches, a practical adjustment that keeps fixtures moving regardless of rain. The nickname "Eisbären" stuck from the early days, a reminder of the cold winters in Nentershausen rather than any particular ferocity on the pitch.

The honour roll is modest but consistent. They won the Amateurliga Rheinland in 1972, a result that kept them in the upper echelons of regional football for a while. More recently, the Rheinlandliga crowns came in 1990, 2009, and 2019. Between these titles, the club qualified for the DFB-Pokal main round seven times, reaching the second round in 1976/77 and again in 1998/99. These runs were not about glory but about proving they could compete beyond their local league.

One name that defines their youth academy is Roman Weidenfeller. He played for the club’s youth team from 1985 to 1996 before moving on to become a World Cup winner and a legend at Borussia Dortmund. His departure was not the end of the relationship; the club still cooperates with 1. FSV Mainz 05, ensuring a steady flow of young talent. Matthias Herget also left his mark, playing for the senior team in 1996/97 and later returning to manage the club, bridging the gap between player and coach.

Despite their longevity, the club has yet to reach the second division. They remain a cornerstone of the Westerwald, battling TuS Koblenz in the local derby, but the step up to professional football continues to elude them.
