Georgian football had no national federation of its own until 15 February 1990. From 1936 to 1989 the country's players belonged to the Soviet federation. Membership of FIFA and UEFA followed in 1992, and the first competitive match came on 21 October 1993 against Switzerland, in qualifying for the 1994 European Under-16 Championship.

The team reached its first finals in 1997 and went out in the group stage. In 2002 it reached the quarter-finals and lost to Switzerland, who went on to win the tournament.

The 2012 campaign is the one that matters most. Tbilisi hosted the elite round, and Georgia finished top of its group ahead of Spain and England. At the finals they reached the semi-finals, where the Netherlands beat them 2–0. Georgia had also hosted qualifying rounds for the 2000 and 2011 tournaments.

The side goes by the senior team's nickname, The Crusaders (Jvarosnebi in Georgian), taken from the Cross of Saint George on the national flag. Its home kit is all white, the away kit black, and the third kit red shirts with black shorts and socks.

The matches that carry weight are against neighbours. Azerbaijan and Armenia are the closest rivals, and the history between them adds an edge to every meeting. Fixtures against Russia are the most charged, and the 7–1 defeat in 2018 is the result Georgian supporters remember from them.

Some players pass through quickly. Giorgi Chakvetadze won 6 caps in 2014 and 2015.
