Gievenbeck

Gievenbeck is a district of Münster, and the club carries its name. The nickname, the 49er, carries the year: 29 May 1949. The club began as more than a football side. Its volleyball players left in 1971 and formed TSC Münster-Gievenbeck, and football stayed behind with the wine red, blue and yellow colours.

What the 49er have become is a club that sends players upward. Marc Lorenz played in the youth teams from 2000 to 2005 and then moved to Schalke 04. His career took in Preußen Münster, Arminia Bielefeld, Wehen Wiesbaden and Karlsruher SC. In 2025 he came back to train with the club that raised him. Guglielmo Maddente took a similar route to Preußen Münster.

Preußen are also the opponents that matter most. The meeting with their reserve side is the city's "Ortsderby", a derby with no love lost, played between a small district club and the bigger name of Münster football.

Their league life has swung both ways. In 2008 they finished second in the Westfalenliga 1 and missed promotion on penalties. They reached the Oberliga Westfalen in 2012, 2018 and 2022, and the second of those spells ended in immediate relegation. In 2022 they got up by beating DJK TuS Hordel in the promotion decider.

The cups have been kinder. The 49er have won the Münster district cup seven times, most recently in 2024 and 2025. In 2016/17 the Westfalenpokal took them to the second round, where Sportfreunde Lotte of the 3. Liga knocked them out. They reached the quarter-finals in 2009/10 and again in 2018/19.

The Brückinger Arena holds 4,000 and once carried the name Senger Arena. Lorenz's return and the 2025 cup are the latest chapters of a club whose players keep leaving and sometimes come back.
