No club shaped Gennaro Gattuso and Gianluigi Buffon before either had played a senior minute — both wore the Azzurrini shirt, Gattuso across fourteen caps between 1995 and 1996, Buffon in three appearances the year before. The Italy Under-18 side exists to catch players at exactly that point, a rung below the Under-21s and run by the Italian Football Federation, which itself dates to 1898. The team's own first outing came half a century later, at the inaugural FIFA Youth Tournament Under-18 in England in 1948, where Italy finished fourth.

There is no home ground in the ordinary sense — a youth side moves with the calendar — but the squad returns most often to Novarello, the Villaggio Azzurro training centre near Novara, with Coverciano and Tirrenia used alongside it. The colours are the same azzurro blue, white and blue that every Italian national side wears, which is where the nickname comes from.

The honours list reads oddly at first: four Mediterranean Games golds, in 1959, 1963 and 1967, then again in 1997, won in eras when Italy sent senior or Under-23 sides into that tournament rather than genuine Under-18 teams. The more recent results belong properly to this age group — silver in 2018, beaten by Spain, and silver again in 2022, beaten by France 0-1. In 2026 the Under-18s were entered against Under-21 opposition and lost the bronze match to Morocco 4-1, a reminder of how uneven that competition has become for them.

Massimiliano Favo took over as head coach in July 2025, succeeding Daniele Franceschini. Recent friendlies have been arranged against the near neighbours who sit at a similar stage of development — Spain and Ukraine both featured twice in the six months to February 2026, results that matter less than what they are for: finding out, before anyone else does, which of these eighteen-year-olds can play.
