Charly Charrier came up through the academy and became the name supporters reach for when they talk about this club. The building he scored for did not begin as a football club at all: in 1947 a group ran the Amicale des Écoles Publiques du Bourg-sous-la-Roche, a schools' association, and it took until 1989 for that body to merge with the Football Club Yonnais, founded in 1932, to form La Roche Vendée Football. The name lasted until 2025, when the club became Vendée Foot Club La Roche-sur-Yon.

Promotion has come in stages rather than in one rush. The Championnat de France D4 title in 2000 was followed by a long spell working back up through regional and national tiers, capped by winning National 3 in 2023 and then National 2 in 2026, a result that put the club into Ligue 3 for the first time. The Coupe de France offered one high point along the way: a run to the last 16 in 2021–22.

An attempt to go further came to nothing. Between 2015 and 2016, plans were drawn up to merge with Vendée Luçon Football and create a single professional Vendée Football Club; local opposition and money problems killed the idea before it got off the ground. What did not die was the rivalry with Vendée Les Herbiers Football, played out as the Derby Vendéen.

Philippe Violeau's name sits differently in the club's story: he played for it and later ran it as president.
