Petone

Petone go into the Central League as one of the clubs whose age nobody else in New Zealand football can quite match — founded on 8 February 1898, before New Zealand fielded a national team. The record that follows from that longevity is not a trophy count but a sequence: three Chatham Cup wins, in 1928, 1930 and 1949, then a wait of decades before the club won a league title of any kind in 1990, and more recently the Capital Premier League three times, in 2006, 2007 and 2019.

The nickname, the Settlers, points at something specific rather than at civic pride in general: Petone was where Wellington's first European settlers came ashore, and the club took the name of the town's founding story rather than inventing one of its own.

Peter McVean kept goal through both of the 1928 and 1930 Chatham Cup wins, a rare case of one player's career bridging both triumphs rather than belonging to just one of them. Andy Leslie came up through Petone before leaving for Villa in Christchurch in 1927, and went on to win a single New Zealand cap in 1936 — one appearance, but enough to mark him out from teammates who never got the call.

Memorial Park has stayed a tight, modest ground rather than growing with the club's history around it. Across the Hutt Valley, Stop Out give Petone the closest thing they have to a needle fixture, the Hutt Derby, two Lower Hutt clubs meeting in the same Central League table.

Behind the first team, the club now runs a junior and youth programme that took in more than 680 players in 2023.
