That was Stadionul August 23 in Bucharest, where 75,000 watched the Under-18s beat Yugoslavia 4-1 in the 1962 European Championship final, staged on home soil. Emil Dumitriu scored twice, with Gergely and Ion Haidu completing the tally. Two years earlier the same generation had lost the final itself, 2-1 to Hungary in Vienna, so the Bucharest result read as the runners-up finishing the job. It remains the only European title won by a Romanian national side at any level. Two of that 1962 squad went on to the senior team and played at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

The Under-18s exist as one step in the Romanian Football Federation's age-group structure, the federation itself dating to 1909 and affiliated to FIFA since 1923 and UEFA since 1954. In October 2024 it played in two separate tournaments, facing Turkey in one and Spain and Portugal in the other.
