Sportfreunde Lotte spent the 2012–13 season winning the Regionalliga West, only to lose the promotion play-off to RB Leipzig. Three years later they were back in that same position, and this time they went up: the 2015–16 title took a team into the 3. Liga for the first time.

Maik Walpurgis had built the foundation for that run during his five years in charge from 2008, before Lotte's third-tier adventure lasted until relegation in 2019. Adam Straith wore the captain's armband through part of that spell.

The club has no meaningful rivalry with SC Paderborn, the bigger name from the same region; the fixture that actually raises pulses in Lotte is against SV Rödinghausen, a near-neighbour they meet in what is known locally as the Nachbarschaftsderby. There is no production line of academy graduates behind any of this — Lotte's teams have tended to be built around experienced signings rather than home-grown talent.

They returned to winning silverware in 2023–24 with the Oberliga Westfalen.
