Sportfreunde Siegen

The football side split from Turnverein Jahn Siegen in 1923 and merged with Sportverein 07 Siegen to form the independent club, though the founding date traces back to 1899. The nickname Krönchenkicker came later, earned in 1955, when the team beat SpVgg 05 Bad Homburg 5–0 to take the German Amateur Championship — a crown given as the symbol of that win, and the club has carried it since.

Promotion to the 2. Bundesliga arrived in 2005, built on 21 goals from Patrick Helmes, and lasted one season before relegation sent Siegen back down. Insolvency followed twice, in 2008 and 2017. Herbert Schäfer, who captained the 1955 side and went on to play for West Germany, remains the name attached to that Amateur Championship team.

Bundesliga days but rewarded on occasion with the Westphalia Cup, taken in 2005. The women's section that once brought national titles to Siegen left in 2005 to become TSV Siegen 1863, so those honours sit outside the men's club's own record now.
