«The Red Theeseners»
Four men met in the Krug zum grünen Kranze pub in Theesen and left it with a sports club. Paul Bökenkamp, Heinrich Heidemann, Willi Mahne and Paul Heidemann founded VfL Theesen there on 1 October 1949. The district in the north of Bielefeld has been the club's home ever since, and the red and white shirts gave the side its local name, the Red Theeseners.
The trophies are indoor ones. Theesen won the Bielefeld indoor city championship in 1974, then again in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
The men's first team is now in the Westfalenliga 1, the sixth tier of German football. It went up at the end of 2024/25 from Landesliga Westfalen, Staffel 1. Its most prominent local rival is VfB Fichte Bielefeld, and the fixture is called the Bielefeld derby or the "Nordderby".
The club's reputation rests on its youth work. Andreas Brandwein coached at the club for 16 years. When he left in 2021, the former professional Andreas Herzog sent a video message in tribute.
Football sits alongside basketball, tennis, table tennis and gymnastics in one association of more than 1,000 members.
